Asking the Boss for a Pay Raise
After thinking about it for weeks, months or years and hustling for just as long you come the to decision that you deserve a pay raise. Maybe your financial situation has changed with a new family, you need to move out of your parent’s house, or have unexpected medical expenses. These and more are what motivates people to ask for a raise, you just need to know more about asking in order to achieve your goal.
Be confident - Are you confident? To begin with some people have a natural reluctance to asking for a raise. Some are more shy or afraid to stand up for themselves. Typically employees accept the 2 percent increase at their annual review due to the fact that they are too afraid to stand up for themselves. Don’t be. If you know that your request is justified by all the hard work then go for it. When it all boils down what is the worst that they can say? The worst is a no response.
Tell your boss your achomplishemnts at work - Go over your achievements in the past months and write them down. After writing them down go back over them and think about how you made a positive change, improved the bottom line, managed disputes at work or prevented a disaster. If you can’t think of any of these then maybe you shouldn’t request a raise and look foolish. But for those with some big wins in the accomplishments focus on quantifying them like your writing your resume.
Know what people that do similar jobs make - Knowing what someone else in the same position makes will help you in knowing what to ask for in the salary range. Don’t just go up and ask for a rise and look foolish when your boss tells you “computer techs don’t make $100,000 a year unless they have 5 years experience and a degree.” You won’t be able to argue your point with what sounds like correct justification unless you know the figures for your job level.
